Undergraduate DIGITAL ARTS students are developing PINTOUR - a series of interactive audio walks and giant map pin sculptures as a showcase for their creative audio work. Located at the campus of University of California, Irvine on the grounds of the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, PINTOUR is a public art project designed to playfully engage the campus community.

‘Let’s meet at the orange pin.’ This collaborative student project consists of five 10 foot tall map pins sited around the Claire Trevor School of the Arts. The pins serve as audio walk and way-finding guideposts. When participants arrive at a colored pin, they scan the QR CODES (or enter a web address) with their mobile phone, load a web interface and choose one of four audio walks. The walks lead from pin to pin and engage listeners with the school in a non-traditional way. The audio content ranges from educational to enter- taining, and will explore the Art, Drama, Dance, and Music departments.

The majority of the money we make with from our Kickstarter campaign will be used towards building and installing the giant map pins. “Developing the project has been a lot of work, we learned a lot, and we’ve definitely had fun working together. Now we need the Kickstarter money to make it possible, and we can’t wait to see it all come together,” says student Robert Padilla. If the fundraising goal is met, work on the sculptures will begin immediately and PINTOUR will premiere at the end of the quarter.

Risks and challenges

We’ve had a great time working together to create PINTOUR but the project definitely has not been easy. We are working on a tight schedule with limited time and resources. From creating the audio walk content to designing the giant pin sculptures, there is always more work to be done. We’re dealing with numerous obstacles including strict campus construction codes and technological challenges. Yet working together as a team, we’re working hard to overcome these challenges to create a fun, innovative, and engaging public art project. We hope that people share our passion and excitement for PINTOUR and are willing to help us meet our challenges.

A short documentary film that examines the spectacle of abnormality that is the digital self.

When Professor Jackson saw Katherine Gu’s Arts 50 Final Project, a physical manifestation of her virtual MySpace self, we knew that there was a future project churning away in his head. Two quarters later, the project took form as Natural Instinct | A Facebook Exposé.

In the final episode of Curious Components learn how to have your Arduino play more than one speaker/buzzer! With simple math and a timer interrupt, you can have each speaker play it’s own unique tone. It’s a great first project to get a peek into how the microcontroller, the heart of the Arduino, works.
